Turn your garden into a research lab
Of course, the best research into the animals and plants in Lelystad is done in the garden. Because that is where nature lives and flourishes! You can help with research in the garden. For example, by hanging up nesting boxes. By counting birds. Or by taking measurements. We call these kinds of projects citizen science: research carried out together with residents. So: turn your garden into a lab and get involved!

Monitor a nest box
Landschapsbeheer Flevoland is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to monitor nesting boxes. These boxes are placed in parks and other public places. As a volunteer, you keep track of which birds use the boxes and share this information with Landschapsbeheer Flevoland. This way, we can see how the boxes contribute to the welfare of (or are the birds doing well in) the city. Will you participate? Contact Bert Zijlstra at zijlstra@landschapsbeheer.net.

Go on a caterpillar safari
More and more often, we find a special - and rare! - moth in Flevoland. The Evening Primrose moth is a butterfly (which first walks around as a caterpillar) that is almost never found. The species is therefore one of two legally protected moths in the Netherlands. Of course, we would like to know how many of these critters are walking or flying around Lelystad. That is why you can help! Go on a caterpillar safari and look for the evening primrose hawk. Then report your sighting! You can do so via lelystad.waarneming.nl. Help the weasel!
The weasel is the smallest mammal found in the Netherlands. And to be fair: it is very cute! Want to give the weasel - and research on the weasel - a helping hand? Then make a 'takkenril'. A 'takkenril' is actually a pile of branches. Other mammals also like to use it. And it even makes birds happy! You drive stakes into the ground and stack the branches in between. The thickest branches go at the bottom. In the film by Landschapsbeheer Flevoland you can find out exactly how to make such a 'takkenril'.
