Nature & management
The municipality sometimes cuts down trees because they are sick, old or dangerous. A sick or rotten tree can fall down during a storm, for example. Sometimes trees also have to go for new buildings or roads. Then the trees are often moved, for example to the tree campsite. New trees are also often planted to compensate for felling. Read more about trees here.
Lelystad municipality practises ecological management. That means nature is important. The grass is not always cut short, because high grass is good for flowers, bees and butterflies. This helps nature. In some places, the municipality does mow more often, such as in parks or near cycle paths or roads. Read more about mowing here.
During major maintenance, the municipality looks at everything in the neighbourhood: streets, pavements, lighting and greenery. They replace broken trees and sometimes plant new bushes or flowers. Residents often have a say in what they want. Want to know when maintenance is carried out in your neighbourhood? Check the map at My Neighbourhood
The leaves and branches are usually processed into compost. This is later used as food for plants and trees. Nothing goes to waste!
If you see a diseased tree, litter or an invasive exotic species, you can report this to the municipality. You can do this via the Fixi app or the Lelystad website.
The municipality provides nature management to keep Lelystad beautiful and healthy. Healthy nature is good for animals, plants and people. It also helps against problems such as flooding and climate change. All these plans are in the Agenda Nature 2030.
Dead trees are sometimes left standing because they are important for animals, such as woodpeckers or insects. This is called "natural value". Only if a dead tree is dangerous is it removed.
Invasive exotic species are plants or animals that do not belong in the Netherlands and are causing problems. Think of Japanese knotweed or the American crayfish. The municipality removes these species so they do not damage other plants, animals or buildings.
Litter
If there is litter in parks or forests, volunteers from Lelystad Schoon or municipal employees will pick it up. But residents can also help by picking up litter themselves. And of course it is even better to prevent littering. So always take your rubbish home with you. Together we keep Lelystad clean!
Out and about and can't take your rubbish home? Then you can throw it in a (red) bin.
The municipality regularly picks up litter in parks, along roads and in forests. There are also many red litter bins in Lelystad for people to dispose of their rubbish. If you see a lot of litter, you can report it to the municipality via the Fixi app. Cleaning up yourself also helps. Or join Lelystad Schoon!
Plans & policies
Yes, you can plant a tree in your own garden. Just choose a tree that does not grow too big, so that it does not cause nuisance to neighbours. And a tree that does well on Lelystad soil. If in doubt, you can ask the municipality for advice.
Yes, you can participate in neighbourhood projects or adopt your own piece of green via People Make the Neighbourhood. Sometimes the municipality organises meetings about green space and maintenance in your neighbourhood. You can give your opinion here.
Sometimes trees have to make way for new houses or roads. The municipality, together with the project developer, tries to prevent this as much as possible, but it does not always succeed. Good trees are moved instead of felled. When trees are cut down, the municipality often replants new trees, for example in parks or along streets. This keeps greenery in the city after all.
Yes, you can make an insect hotel, plant flowers for bees or hang up a birdhouse. You can also pick up litter when you are outside or apply for adoptable greenery. If everyone does 1 thing, together we will make a big difference for nature. Together 1 for nature!
