The story of Green Ambassador Hannek

In the Landstreken neighbourhood, Green Ambassador Hannek adopted a piece of public green together with local residents. Hannek is now entering the fifth season with his adopted piece of green space. This required permission from the closest neighbours around the field. As a result, the neighbours occasionally help when digging, mowing or raking is needed. Hannek takes into account the wishes of different neighbours: "Some don't want the vegetation too high, others don't want a tree in sight. And the fishermen want enough grass at the water's edge to be able to fish. Every year it is a surprise what does or does not come up and it keeps experimenting with sowing times, mowing and types of flower mixtures. With the varied vegetation, a duck basket, bat box, insect hotel and nesting boxes, this green space has become more insect-friendly in any case." Besides being busy in nature, 'his' piece of adopted green space also leads to more contact with neighbours and Hannek gets enthusiastic reactions from passers-by.

The story of Green Ambassador Lambert

If you drive or cycle through Lelystad, you will occasionally see a piece of public greenery that looks different. Usually with a small green sign in it saying "This neighbourhood green has been adopted". On the Kustendreef along the Gors, there has also been such a green sign for a few months now. If things go well, this stretch of roadside will slowly but surely turn into an insect-friendly flowering strip. Indeed, Green Ambassador Lambert adopted this strip because he was looking to expand the nectar and pollen area for the bee colonies in his garden. Lambert approached the municipality asking if he could take over management responsibility to make it more flower-rich and insect-friendly. This turned out to be surprisingly easy to arrange. After signing the adoption agreement, in which he assumes the maintenance obligation including the conditions it must meet, the municipality stopped periodic mowing. Now it is up to Lambert to continue. The brambles and nettles have largely been removed and he has then sown nectar seeds and regional mixtures. "What's so nice," Lambert says, "is that you have company when you're busy like this and get enthusiastic responses from local residents. Dog owners and walkers stop for a chat, are curious, sometimes think along or offer planting materials."

The story of Green Ambassador Gert

Lelystad resident Gert has been committed to nature in Lelystad for years. In his 'Beleef- en beweegtuin Bij De Ooievaar' you can enjoy the greenery and be active in the open air. Together with the municipality, Gert turned this piece of greenery into a place where nature and people have space. "I signed up as a Green Ambassador because I like to exchange the experiences we have in this project - now 10 years old - with people who have yet to start anywhere," Gert says. "To other people I would say: look around you if there are already initiatives and join them!"

The story of Green Ambassador Jim

Jim has a lot of experience with green roofs. On his home in Warande, he has installed not one, but two roof gardens. He knows all about their benefits, construction and maintenance.

A green roof is a kind of garden on a building. Think of your shed, garage or the flat roof of your house. Jim even organised an information evening for local residents.

Do you have any questions about green roofs? Jim will be happy to help! You can reach him via idea broker Ineke.

Help out in the Kitchen Garden

Feel like rolling up your sleeves? Then the Swap Garden is the place to be! You will find the Ruiltuin next to the animal pasture, at Schouw 12-01 in Lelystad. Here, you can enjoy working in the greenery, but also organise meetings or have a cup of coffee. The Ruiltuin was set up in 2008 and covers about 250 square metres. The idea? To create a place where Lelystad residents can bring or exchange plants and shrubs.
