Gelderse Hout
Gelderse Hout
In Gelderse Hout, the managers have created a pinetum. A pinetum is a living collection of pines and firs, conifers in other words, or rather coniferous trees. However, the clay soil on which Gelderse Hout is laid out does not really lend itself to conifers. Most conifers prefer lighter soils, which also contain less lime. Nevertheless, Gelderse Hout has retained a large variety of tree species. This includes several non-native conifers. The sequoia, the giant tree from California, the sitka spruce, from western Canada (Sitka is an island off the coast of Vancouver) and the giant silver fir can be admired here. Along the route are the most common native deciduous trees.
