On 20 November 2024, primary school pupils and local residents set to work for an even greener Lelystad. Because if we all help, together we are 1 for nature. During the tree festival day, the planting of a food forest was started.
Planting a food forest
A food forest is a place where different plants, trees and shrubs grow together. You can find fruit, nuts and herbs for people and animals all year round. New trees contribute to biodiversity. Biodiversity means that many different species of plants and animals live in an area. The more different species there are, the better it is for nature. That is why a food forest was chosen.
Together 1 for a food forest
Planting the food forest started during the Lelystad Boomfeestdag. Pupils from primary schools de Windroos and de Boeier in the Karveel area got to work together with local residents, supervised by greenery staff from BOR (Beheer Openbare Ruimte). Prior to the Tree Festival Day, pupils also received an educational lesson on trees and tree species, provided by the municipality.

By replacing Norway spruce for a food forest, we are making Lelystad better for animals, plants and people. An even greener and nature-rich Lelystad is good for our health and the future. Together, we are working on Lelystad, where nature has a place in our daily lives.
